"The consequence is that we are less and less a free culture, more and more a permission culture." - Lawrence Lessig, Free cultureProfessor Lawrence Lessig found just the right words to explain the sentiment I have been feeling all along since I started studying Law, in 2001. Being myself a founder of an artist association (Débris), my very first practical law experience was actually "how do I protect the art of my fellows while incouraging others to join us and work with us, even on our works?". Then Creative Commons came, and I must say, as it was presented in Italy at the very beginning, I didn't like it. It seemed to me that the fight was not for free as in "freedom", but for free as "free beer". And I didn't want that. I wanted to prevent artistic creation from being unlawfully and commercially spoiled, I didn't want to simply give them away. Furthermore, I wanted to give choice to creators on the destiny of their creations. I was looking for... Creative Commons, yes. But I realized it only later on, when I started reading Wired, and Lessig's articles. Eureka! Then I went on reading and studying his and other's articles and opinion. On the way back from my first journey in the world of free culture, I was already convinced. So now this blog. I think of this blog as an agorà, when my readers and I will discuss about the world of free culture. I chose to write it in English to involve as many people as possible, from different cultural background, with different expeciences, and so on. Differences, when persuing a common aim, can only be of enrichment. Enough with the chitchat. Stay tuned for more +39 free culture. |
